We've been low key the last couple weeks but that's only because we gots lots happenin in the weeks to come.

One thing in particular is the next installment of CARLSFEST.

Long time u.b.c. crew member and official party adviser to almost all u.b.c. events Captain Carl hosts one huge night of debauchery & chaos around the end of October every year. People come from mile's around to attend this mess of a party and it never disappoints. This year he's taking it to a whole other level and we're more than happy to help...
Carl's putting together an all day scavenger hunt and a few live bands to throw down at the evening festivities as we speak. Things are still being finalized so check back on the official u.b.c. goodtime blog or at therealangler.com/events/

Where- The Bar: Downtown St. Petersburg
When- October 23rd
Why- Because you need this

When we got back to the beach Scott busted out some surgical scissors & adam went to town on b's dreddies outside the truck on the side of A1A... I took the liberrty of video taping the event with my phone.

Huricane Earl Recap Part 3

Friday we didn't even try to wake up early and didn't bother rushing to the beach because for some reason we all thought the swell peaked yesterday evening. Really wish we had a clue what was gonna happen because I & pretty sure everybody else woulda taken it alot easier the day before & not ran ourselves right into the ground that night. When we pulled up the ground was rumbling and the average wave was well overhead and CLEAN. I grabbed a couple pics and then we made out first attempt out totally underestimating it and getting our ass's handed to us on the paddle out, the clean up sets we're rolling in at a solid 10 foot plus and they just kept coming. We made it to the outside and had a crazy good morning of surfing, wish I coulda stayed out all day but like I said we not knowingly ran ourselves into the ground the day before either way it was a classic Florida hurricane swell & everybody had a blast.

Thursday we woke up way to late, eventually we got moving. When we finally made it to Juno to find solid head & clean, so for the first time I can think of since I started this blog I finally took some pictures before I hit the water. So I did my best to get some shot's but unfortunately the telephoto lens broke so I had to make the best of what I had... anyway all morning was good and then around noon the tides changed and it all started getting funky so we went in for lunch... oh yeah so when we got there that morning somebody (we'll keep his name out but it starts with a b) decided to drop one in the dunes. I don't know if it was the coffee or what but he dropped the gnarliest poop and he did it in the dunes right where the truck was parked. Now the smell was bad enough when he first did it but when we got back to the truck this smell was sooooooo raunchy I can't even think of something to compare it to after a few hours baking in the Florida sun the smell was absolutely unbearable we couldn't get out of there fast enough, so the hole moral of this story is if you do need to go & there's no bathroom around at least take a little walk away from where ya parked.

I got off track for a second sorry but when we got back from lunch we parked in a new spot of course and went back out all thought the tide really got a hold of it & it was just mushy and barely breaking outside. It did make for some damm good skim though, so we hung out grabbed some pics and waited for things to work out which eventually made for a really fun session that lasted till a little after dark.

Vilano Recap

Last weekend we packed up the u.b.c. skim team & headed north to Vilano Beach for the 2010 Florida Skimboarding Pro/Am. The waves weren't anything to write home about but it was still solid knee to occasional waist high on shore which made for some fun skim. Saturday afternoon a crazy lighting storm rolled thru and caused the event to be on hold for a few hours which then resulted to an impromptu move down the beach where the skim was looking better, the only problem was the sun was just about down & due to lack of time they had to run heats in what soon became the dark, but not being able to see the waves didn't stop ryan from advancing to the semmi's the next day. Overall there was some fierce competition but the team held their own real well, nobody made it to the finals but there's always next year right.

Was down in nokomis yesterday skimmin and there was your normal tourists standing right in the break.. some locals went up to the lifeguards and 5 minutes later 2 lifeguards walk out with 2 no swimming signs which they stuck down in the sand and set up a no swim zone right where the break was so we had our own skim zon...e and no tourists to worry about gettin in our way.. proabably the sickest thing i have ever seen!!!

alright it's time for another recap about another great event in the great state of Florida. It's seems like just about everybody in st. pete knew about this event because there we're a shit load of out the other day, but just incase you some how missed out I'll do my best to try to recap how the day went down.... by the way I'm talking about the mayday skim comp out on upham beach last Saturday. Of course got a way later start to the day then expected but by the was able to get my act together and make the 5 minute treck to upham from my house I was glad to see there was actually a fun little wave rolling into shore, anyway we set up the booth sliced a tun of oranges and prepeared for a fun day. I had no idea how huge of a turn out it was going to be though, by 11:00 the entire beach was packed & everybody was there for the event some to compete but most to watch... the skim scene is alive and well out here on the gulf and that made for a rad event. Overall the skimming was sick everybody threw down hard & Ryan made it to the semi's of his division. The event went till about 4 and came to an end right before the wind got on it and really just chopped it all up. We all had a blast Tyler snapped the nose of his board and Claire made a point to take tuns of picture's & I gotta say she's doing a real good job too. So of course I'm sure I'm leaving alot out but it's all I got right now. Wanna say huge thanks to Austin Piazza for putting on the event always thanks to the u.b.c. team and thanks to all ya'll that came out and supported the scene... I still can't get over how packed it was out there.

First Attempt...

The weather is finally normal again and the water is warming up as well, so last weekend me & Dobbs made our first attempt of the year to actually try to catch some fish. Word on the street is the flats have been going off so we loaded up the kayaks and headed for a spot south of the skyway. We spent all morning trying and searching for some action but all we we're able to find we're little punk ass pin fish harassing our bait. After a few hours of it we decided to try our luck in some open water and just see what happens... next thing you know we're fishing (for ladyfish) but it was fun, after a morning of absolutely nothing an afternoon full of big ol' lady fish actually made for a great time. They we're pulling us all over the place and putting up a surprisingly good fight. So the moral of the story is Florida is getting back to normal and the ocean is starting to see some life again so get outside and enjoy yourself.

600 Block Skate Jam Recap

First of all huge thanks to everybody that made it out last Saturday we couldn't of done it with at ya'll. We had everything all set and in order and ready for an all day skate jam and game of skate, Fubar took care of closing down the block (huge thanks) Pabst Blue Ribbon provided plenty of beer and set up a bike race, Barker hooked it up with tuns of burritos and chips from chipotle, and skatepark of tampa offered to donate the ramps for the street course. Then we watched the weather report and everything got put on hold long story short Tommie & I decided postpone the skate jam due to a 70% chance of rain, then around noon on saturday the rain stopped and the sun came out. The street was still blocked of for the bike race so we made some calls drove all over town rounding up some stuff to skate and threw together a little course to skate. All in all it worked out in the end and the day turned out to be real good time. On another note plans are already in the works for the next month and it's looking to be much bigger and better we'll keep you posted so check back.

The Finest Skateshop is tired of the Bullshit that is going on in our Skateboard Community. We our tired of the shops threating or beatening up kids for supporting skateboarding at local skateparks. We our tired of shops throwing rocks, paintball, and etc. on other shop windows. We our tired of shops getting other people to do there dirty work by breaking in skateshops and trying to rob them. We our tired of other shop sending there riders or there people to come in and run there mouth.

This shit is not SKATEBOARDING at all! Skateboarding is about freedon, expressing urself, and having fun. Skateboarding is not about being negative and destroying the Skateboard Community. Skateboarding is about getting together and making a positve change in the Community.

Instead of beatening up people for Supporting Skateboarding just go do a normal Game of Skate instead of fighting. If u dont like a shop dont go and do stupid things to it. Just go mind ur own business and worry about ur Skateboarding.

So if you haven't figured it out already we're crazy about Florida around here and it felt like it was about time to make an official U.B.C. coat of arms and why not dedicate it to our great land that is Florida. This was a long and thought out process that took some time to finalize I think the final version was like the 9th draft but after alot of creative criticism and long sleepless nights deciding what should be included we all decided on the one featured here so just for kicks I'm going to make my best attempt to break it down for ya...

1.The surfboard: this is a template taken from one of Dobbs's most common shapes he used to do; standard shortboard with a big ol' fat rounded pin at the bottom.

2. The jelly fish: this is the same jelly from the green jelly shirt and when representing FLA waters it just seems appropriate, those things are all over the place around here.

3. The waves: yes we got waves in Florida on both sides to, if you don't believe us then good lets keep it that way.

4. The state: what coat of arms wouldn't be complete with out featuring the land your dedicating the whole thing to, also notice the star, that's the area where this whole thing we call u.b.c. was created in.

5. The anchor: this one's pretty self explanatory; we spend alot of our time here in FLA tossing these thing's off the bow's of boats... it just seemed appropriate.

6. The Palm: do I really need to spell this one out for ya...

7. The Mermaids: people will try to tell ya that mermaids don't exist, well than those people have never been to Weeki Wachee Florida, because if they had been they would have seen a plethora of mermaids swimming about. If you've never been I sudgest you go and maybe wear this shirt well your there I bet the mermaids would love it.

8. The Orange Blossom: another staple of Florida's great landscape, that smell is one of the greatest smell in the world... that & sex wax.

Turkey Classic Recap

So the Turkey Classic Sim Comp went down over the weekend out on Pass A Grill Beach and we we're there to help with the event. The gulf was Gulf was about as flat and glassy as it could be and the tide was crazy low all day which all made for horrible conditions, but it didn't stop everybody from throwing down. Brent & Ryan both entered and did good... due to the flat & dry conditions thought it made it really hard to complete a trick, saw a lot of nasty fall thru out the day and Brent's hands we're all cut up from falling on all the shells but it didn't stop him from advancing to the semis. As always we had free oranges for everybody and a few cold ones to sip on. All n all it was a good day. Monday evening at upham the skim was goin off with some on average chest high shore break. I was able to swing by for a minute and grab a few pics of one our skim team rider Ryan. Unfortanitly something went wrong and my camera didn't feel like focusing that day so the pictures aren't top quality but you can get an idea of whatr was goin on by the looks of a couple...

Huricane Ida came and went before I could finish ranting and raving about everybody that comes out to surf these storms. So I'll take that as a sign that I need to shut up already and just go surf.

Anyway lets talk real quick about the hype and then the let down I'm just as guilty as everybody else for claiming this as the Big Storm, and can you really blame us it was an extremely slow summer on both sides of florida, but don't take this wrong way sure the storm could've taken it's time and spun around the gulf for a few days giving a nice week of solid clean head high surf, but it didn't. It just zipped thru and gave us some really fun chest high lines for a day or so. Well unfrotanitly I missed mondays session because I was to busy trying prepare for a week off, and complaining about people. So I made a point to get up extra early on Tuesday with hopes of something to surf, so I'm glad I did the waves didn't last all day but it was a good time.

I said I'd take pictures so I did the only thing is the wait in between sets was a really long time and I couldn't stand on the beach that long so I snapped a couple real quick and this is the best one I got. As always gulfster.com did a great job of compiling tons of pics so go there to see what this storm had to offer.

Oh yeah we should have fun wind chop for the rest of the week so go surf

Just as I was about to official give up on the worst huricane season in recent history... good o'l Ida comes out of nowhere and by the looks of things she doing exactly what we want her to do. This should be a damm good time and I swear I will do my best to get photos this time I really mean it. Also if I can just ad one thing that clearly needs to be added. If your one of those people that don't actually surf on a regular basis but as soon as a big hyped storm rolls thru town your on it and then you and as many random "oh yeah I surf" friend's pile into a minivan, grab your china popouts and garage sale specials and then charge the most popular spot. Well that's fine if you are one of those people, who am I to judge, we all had to start somewhere right.

Anyway if you've actually been reading this blog over the past couple of years then you've heard me go on and on about this little issue of mine one to many times, so I'll try to wrap it up by just saying "very politely" if you don't really surf but want to tell everybody how you surfed the big storm go right ahead, maybe just don't go to better spots and if you do maybe try paddling out down the beach where the crowd isn't so thick, here's a little tip to for ya; there's a good chance it's better down the beach anyway and the only reason that one spot is super crowded is... well I'm trying to be polite so I wont dive into that. Anyway all I'm trying to say is some of us wait anxiously all year for these storms to roll thru our back yard so please respect that and understand you don't need to go surf where everybody else is and if you do then please respect the people that have a little more experience and skill then you currently do, we can avoid fighting and hostility if you avoid us.

Re Grand Opening Party Recap

So if didn't know The Finest Skateshop relocated to the downtown area of St Pete.So last Friday we all teamed up to throw a huge re grand opening party. If you made it out than huge thanx, everybody had a crazy good time. If you didn't make it here's little recap:

We basicly had a block party on the 600 block of Central Ave with 5 bands playing in back alley dj's in the shop and a live art showcase out front. PBR donated a keg and so did Durty Nelly's, we had a sick fashion show going on, and U.B.C. was there slangnin' shirts at crazy discount prices including support florida pickers shirts, just about every grom at the party got one up and wore it them whole night it was cool to those shirts everywhere you looked. We also got alot of signitures on the petition for the donwtown skatepark. Overall no fights, no drama, nothing like that. Just a ton of people having a good time. Thanks to the Finest, Star Booty, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Durty Nellys, High Mighty, Monster Energy Drink, Pink Cricket, DVS, Brent for helping with the booth, and eberybody that came out and supported the sceen. Let's keep it goin'

What up!

In every big downtown its illegal to skateboard but u know what skateboarders still skate in there downtown. U know in Philly at Love Park cops dont give u tickets. They just take ur wheels off & thrown them around. U think that will stop them for skatboarding in downtown area or Love Park. No it doesnt stop them at all!!!!!!!!!!

So what Im saying is: Lets build our downtown skateboard scence. Lets take over our downtown, skate the spots that our downtown has, build spots downtown, & etc. Let me tell u its sad that we don't have a strong skateboard scence in the downtown area.

Its like the skateboard scence is all about skateboarding little bs rec. center parks.

Lets take it bak to the streets & build a solid skate scence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big Cypress

Me and Claire made a quick trip over to South Florida last weekend and on the way home made a stop at Big Cypress Indian Reservation. If your ever taking your time on alligator alley I suggest you make the stop and go check out the museum and nature trail. There are some cool things to see and some good education about the heritage of the Seminole Tribe.

We lost a good man yesterday. Patrick was an amazing actor and we feel privileged to have been lucky enough to grow up with his movies, everybody here at u.b.c. will miss him.
